Breathitt Juvenile Detention Center provides a safe and secure environment for Kentucky’s at-risk juveniles to grow and learn to be productive individuals. The facility offers many opportunities to the youth allowing them to grow and flourish.
About Breathitt Juvenile Detention Center
Breathitt Juvenile Detention Center was the first state run facility constructed to house juveniles only. It was built and founded in 1997 and represents the long-lasting legacy of the Department of Juvenile Justice. The facility saw an expansion in 2001 to accommodate more space and amenities for juveniles in its care.
Available amenities include a library, indoor and outdoor recreation areas, counseling services, and art programs. It is a low-level secure facility that houses a maximum of 43 male juveniles from across the state.

Visitation Info
Saturday and Sunday 12:30pm - 2:00pm, Tuesday and Thursday 6:00pm - 7:00pm. Virtual visitation is available. For families who do not have access to an electronic device, a virtual visitation station is available Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00am – 4:00pm EDT at 8711 LaGrange Rd., Building E, Louisville, Ky. 40242. Dennis Moore, Superintendent
Dennis Moore was appointed superintendent at Breathitt Regional Juvenile Detention Center in October 2026. In this role, Moore supports the day-to-day work of the facility while keeping juveniles, staff and Kentucky's communities safe.
Superintendent Moore has spent his entire juvenile justice career with Breathitt Regional Juvenile Detention Center, beginning as a youth worker I and II. He was later promoted to youth worker III, where he took on a larger role in supervising youth at the facility. In this role, Moore was awarded the facility's 2003 Outstanding Youth Worker of the Year and the department's 2008 Outstanding Regional Juvenile Detention Center Employee award. He then became youth service program supervisor before being made the facility's deputy superintendent in 2018. Beginning in October 2025, Moore temporarily served as superintendent until the facility's permanent superintendent returned from his own temporary assignment at another facility in March 2026.
